About

m_selfieThroughout high school and college, I had a keen interest in photography; taking as many courses as those institutions offered, sometimes repeating courses just because I could. Once graduated and working, I continued my photographic journey and studied at NYU for three years to earn my masters degree in studio art / photography. Studying under photographers such as Mary Ellen Mark and Mark Jenkinson, my most rewarding project was documenting life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of NY Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Working at NBC (since the late 90s) has given me ample opportunities to improve my portrait-taking ability, especially under pressure, as well as taken me to places around the world I may have otherwise never been able to photograph. From Oprah Winfrey to LeBron James to Justin Timberlake, my portrait subjects are as varied as my news assignments – hurricanes, plane crashes, and kidnappings. In 2009 I earned an Emmy for shooting (video) / producing “Miracle on the Hudson” (US Airways #1549 ditch on the Hudson).

For anyone who has an interest in cameras, technology, and workflow: I primarily shoot with a Leica M6 and a Nikon D750. The Leica rangefinder will forever be my favorite camera to work with – paired with either a 35mm or 50mm, it offers a photographic experience unlike anything a DSLR can. And even though sometimes the DSLR is the tool for the job, I must say the D750 is seeing less and less time as I explore the limits of the wonderful FujiFilm X100f.  I process all of my images (either direct RAW files from the D750 or scanned negatives from the Leica) through the Adobe Creative Cloud products.
